PRI leaders accuse Morena of shielding officials from U.S. legal scrutiny

PRI leader Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas and Deputy Rubén Moreira Valdez have accused the ruling Morena party of attempting to protect political figures facing scrutiny from United States authorities.

Moreira Valdez criticized Andrés López Beltrán for escalating a personal matter regarding a canceled U.S. visa into a state issue involving national sovereignty, warning it could trigger conflict between Mexico and the U.S. Additionally, Moreira questioned the federal government's handling of Rubén Rocha Moya, following U.S. requests for his provisional detention for extradition purposes related to allegations of providing institutional protection to Sinaloa Cartel factions.

Alejandro Moreno characterized the situation as a “global scandal,” alleging that the federal government is prioritizing political complicity over the rule of law. He demanded that Rocha Moya face justice, suggesting that if Mexican authorities do not act, he should be handed over to U.S. justice. Moreno claimed that Morena is “terrified” of ongoing U.S. investigations, imputations, and extradition requests targeting its members.
