PRI pushes for free TV broadcast of all 2026 World Cup matches in Mexico

The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in Guadalajara will present a proposal to the Senate’s Permanent Political Commission urging that every 2026 FIFA World Cup match be shown on open‑air television in Mexico. PRI leader Verónica Flores highlighted that ticket prices for live games can reach 400,000 pesos, meaning a minimum‑wage worker would need to spend three and a half years of income to afford a seat. She argued that, given the substantial public investment in infrastructure, security, mobility and promotion, the tournament should be accessible to all Mexicans rather than a luxury for a few.

Flores emphasized that the reliance on subscription‑based broadcasters excludes millions of citizens, despite the event being funded partially with taxpayer money. The proposal seeks to mandate free-to-air transmission to ensure the World Cup is a shared national experience.
