PRI sweeps Coahuila Congress as PAN set to lose state registration

In the recent mid‑term elections in the Mexican state of Coahuila, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) won every seat in the state congress. The National Action Party (PAN) obtained only 2.1% of the vote – about 26,877 votes out of 1.24 million – falling short of the 3 % threshold required to retain official party status in the state. Consequently, the PAN is expected to lose its state registration, and the Green Party (PVEM) and Citizens' Movement (MC) face the same fate with 2.6% and 1.9% of the vote respectively.

Governor Mauricio Kuri González of Querétaro linked PAN’s defeat to the perceived performance of the PRI‑led state government, stating, “Es importante un equilibrio en el país, que haya inclusión y balance entre todos.” Analysts highlighted factors behind the PRI’s success, including Governor Manolo Jiménez García’s administration, internal divisions within Morena, and the limited ground‑level work of opposition parties. The results mark a significant setback for PAN, PVEM and MC in Coahuila and reshape the state’s political balance.

The election outcome is expected to prompt restructuring within the affected parties as they confront the loss of formal registration and reduced influence in the state.
