Prichard Colón dies at 33 after decade of brain injury

Former Puerto Rican professional boxer Prichard Colón has died at the age of 33. His death was confirmed by his father, Richard Colón, via social media.

Colón’s life and career were irrevocably changed during a 2015 bout against Terrel Williams in Fairfax, Virginia. During the match, Colón suffered multiple illegal blows to the back of the head, known as “rabbit punches.” Following the fight, he collapsed and was diagnosed with a subdural hematoma. He spent 221 days in a coma and lived the remainder of his life in a vegetative state, requiring constant medical care and assistance from his parents.

At the time of the injury, Colón was an undefeated prospect with a 16-0 record. The incident sparked significant debate regarding fighter safety and officiating. In response to the tragedy, the World Boxing Council (WBC) implemented the “Prichard Colón Rule” to strictly penalize illegal strikes to the back of the head.
