Priene Ancient City highlighted for its preserved Hellenistic urban fabric

The Priene Ancient City, often referred to as the ‘Pompeii of Anatolia,’ was the subject of a recent discussion hosted by the Ecosystem Protection and Nature Lovers Association (EKODOSD). Dr. Ahmet Ali Altın, Deputy Head of the Priene Ancient City Excavations, presented on the site’s historical, architectural, and archaeological significance.

Founded in the 4th century BCE, Priene is noted for its successful application of the Hippodamian grid plan onto steep, rocky terrain. Because the city did not experience intense settlement during the Roman Imperial period, it has largely preserved its Late Classical and Hellenistic urban fabric. This preservation provides vital data regarding the public structures and civil architecture of a Hellenic polis.

Key structures highlighted include the Temple of Athena, the Theater, and the Bouleuterion. Additionally, the city’s residential architecture offers some of the best-preserved examples of Hellenistic houses in Anatolia, providing insights into ancient daily life. Priene was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2018, a status that continues to increase its recognition and importance for future heritage candidacy.
