Priest identifies new category of internet-related sins in confession

Theologian and priest Grzegorz Strzelczyk has noted a shift in the types of transgressions brought to confession in Poland, highlighting a new category of sins related to the internet and new technologies. Specifically, penitents are increasingly confessing issues such as the excessive use of social media and unproductive time spent on platforms like TikTok.

Strzelczyk observes that while fewer people are attending confession compared to several decades ago—a trend exacerbated by the pandemic—those who do participate tend to be more self-aware and prepared. Rather than simply listing external actions, modern penitents often engage in deeper reflection regarding personal responsibility and the desire for spiritual accompaniment in the process of conversion.

Additionally, there is a growing awareness of moral responsibility regarding the common good, such as the theft of items from workplaces. While the Church has not created an official list of new sins, the priest notes that the moral evaluation of actions continues to depend on intention and circumstances, as outlined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
