Priest Román de la Cruz Hernández murdered in Hidalgo, Mexico

Priest Román de la Cruz Hernández, 48, was found dead on September 15 on the Tolago-Tetlapaya highway near the border of Lolotla and Tlanchinol in Hidalgo, Mexico. The victim, who served as the parish priest of Santa Cruz in Huejutla, showed signs of gunshot wounds.

Authorities recovered a wine-colored Toyota Tacoma with Baja California license plates near the body. A written message, believed to be from a criminal group, was also found at the scene, though its specific content has not been officially released. The Hidalgo State Attorney General's Office (PGJEH) has opened a homicide investigation, but no arrests have been reported.

The Mexican Episcopal Conference (CEM) and the Diocese of Huejutla have expressed deep indignation and solidarity with the community. They have demanded an exhaustive investigation to ensure justice and to prevent the crime from remaining unpunished, citing an alarming context of violence in the country. The murder is noted as one of several attacks against religious leaders in Mexico in recent years.
