Priests in Ecuador and Colombia involved in crucifix accidents

Two separate incidents involving falling religious structures have gained international attention. In Guayaquil, Ecuador, Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari died on October 17, 2026, after a heavy wooden crucifix fell from a wall and struck him during a live-streamed Mass at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Witnesses suggested the accident might have been caused by a loose bolt or vibrations from sound equipment, and his family has called for a formal investigation.

In a separate incident in Colombia, Father Óscar Echeverri survived a similar accident. Video footage shows Echeverri attempting to adjust or maintain a large cross when the structure became unstable and fell on him. Unlike the tragedy in Ecuador, Echeverri sustained only minor injuries and was able to stand up immediately after the impact. The Colombian incident, which reportedly occurred in April, resurfaced on social media following the news of the death in Ecuador.
