Prilep beekeepers report worst honey production in 50 years
Beekeepers in Prilep, North Macedonia, report that this year marks the worst honey production in five decades. During the opening of the 17th Honey Festival, local beekeepers highlighted that climate change, reduced forage, and wildfires have severely impacted the industry.
Approximately 150 beekeepers in the Prilep region are concerned about bee survival and production levels. While average production per bee colony typically ranges from 8 to 10 kilograms, many beekeepers are seeing zero production, while others are only managing 2 to 3 kilograms. Dejan Boškoski, president of the 'Brotherhood' beekeeping association, noted that while these shortages may lead to higher prices, beekeepers have agreed not to increase prices during the fair.
In addition to environmental factors, beekeepers expressed concern regarding the sale of counterfeit honey on social media platforms.
