Venkо Filipče accused of inciting violence after attack on SDSM youth in Novo Selo

On 6 August 2026 a group of young Social‑Democratic (SDSM) activists were attacked in the village of Novo Selo while accompanying Prime Minister Christian Miccosski. The assailants, described by SDSM as a band of about ten men, allegedly included the driver of the local mayor and persons linked to the VMRO‑DPMNE‑aligned group.

VMRO‑DPMNE publicly blamed SDSM leader Venkо Filipče, calling him the “talent” behind the incident and accusing him of organising children to create tensions. The party named several individuals – Hristijan Efthimov, Ilija Stojanov and Zoran Trifunovski – as having criminal convictions for violence and drug‑related offences. Filipče responded, condemning the physical assault and saying the state is frightened by the truth about contaminated drinking water in Gostivar and other areas. He demanded an urgent police and prosecutor investigation and warned that the government will not silence dissenting voices.

The ruling coalition also announced a €149 million investment to complete a railway line to Bulgaria, a project previously stalled. VMRO‑DPMNE added that during SDSM’s time in power no action was taken to improve water quality, despite evidence of unsafe drinking water in multiple locations.
