Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare seeks $15 bn for Windhoek infrastructure and demands accountability

The City of Windhoek told Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare it needs about N$15 billion to rehabilitate ageing roads and replace a water pipeline network that is more than 35 years old. City officials, including strategic executives David Adams and Pierre van Rensburg, highlighted deteriorating roads, water infrastructure, housing pressure and public‑transport challenges, and called for stronger cooperation and a coordinated national funding model between central and local government.

During the same visit, the prime minister inspected the Government Stores and Government Garage in Windhoek, accompanied by Works and Transport Minister Veikko Nekundi. Ngurare addressed allegations of procurement irregularities, citing examples of inflated prices for batteries, vehicles and school supplies, and demanded greater transparency, integrity and swift distribution of stored school equipment to regions. He warned that the government must be accountable and protect public resources from misuse.
