Sri Lanka PM Harini Amarasuriya attends 76th Bellanwila Esala Perahera

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya attended the 76th annual Bellanwila Esala Perahera at the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya on August 15. During the event, she emphasized the vital role that religious and cultural festivals play in preserving the nation’s heritage for future generations.

Dr. Amarasuriya described the Esala Perahera as a living heritage that integrates religious beliefs, traditional music, dance, and craftsmanship. She noted that the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya is a significant site for both Buddhist and artistic traditions. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of teaching Buddhist values, such as compassion and non-violence, to youth to help them understand their cultural identity.

She further stated that the government holds a responsibility to support traditional artists to ensure their skills and knowledge are passed down. Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath also attended, noting the collective responsibility to promote Sri Lankan Buddhist philosophy and culture.
