Sri Lanka irrigation authorities open reservoir gates due to heavy rainfall

Due to continuous heavy rainfall, the Department of Irrigation in Sri Lanka has begun releasing water from several major reservoirs to manage rising water levels.

Key actions include opening eight gates at the Deduru Oya reservoir, discharging 10,400 cusecs of water, and opening six gates at the Rajanganai reservoir. Other reservoirs, including Kukule Ganga and Kalawewa, have also implemented water releases.

The Department of Irrigation has issued warnings to residents living in low-lying areas near the Deduru Oya, Kala Oya, and Kuda Ganga river basins to remain highly vigilant regarding changing water levels.
