Prime Minister Ishiba defends national interest against U.S. tariffs

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has responded strongly to a letter from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the imposition of 25% tariffs. During a street speech in Chiba Prefecture, Ishiba stated that the matter is a fight for national interest, declaring, “We will not be looked down upon. Even with allies, we must speak up fairly and squarely.”

While some opposition parties and media outlets have criticized the Prime Minister for potentially raising the bar for negotiations, observers note that Ishiba's stance follows a period of typically calm and policy-focused discourse. The tension arises as tariff negotiations have seen very few successful agreements globally, with only the United Kingdom and Vietnam reaching settlements as of mid-July.
