Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif highlights mediation role at UN General Assembly
Addressing the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted Pakistan's role as a mediator in regional conflicts. He stated that Pakistan successfully brought the United States and Iran to the negotiating table in Islamabad, leading to the establishment of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
During his address, Sharif emphasized the necessity of keeping the Strait of Hormuz and Bab-el-Mandeb open to protect the global economy. He also expressed concern over regional hostilities, specifically condemning Houthi drone strikes against Saudi Arabia and describing any threat to the sanctity of the Two Holy Mosques as a ‘red line’.
On the sidelines of the assembly, Prime Minister Sharif met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The leaders discussed strengthening bilateral relations and the regional security situation. President Pezeshkian reaffirmed Iran's commitment to the Islamabad MoU, expressing readiness to advance the agreement.
