Prince Adebayo proposes mini-grids for Nigeria power crisis
Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate Prince Adewole Adebayo has outlined several proposals to address national challenges in Nigeria. In his book, ‘Farewell to Poverty and Insecurity’, Adebayo proposes a National Distributed Electricity Initiative to combat the country’s power crisis. This plan suggests developing tens of thousands of mini-grids, embedded generation, and stand-alone power systems—utilizing solar, wind, hydro, and natural gas—to support local communities, hospitals, and industrial parks without replacing the national grid.
To support this, Adebayo proposes establishing a ‘Bank of Electricity’ to provide long-term, single-digit financing for electricity infrastructure and equipment manufacturing. He also suggests expanding the National Power Training Institute into a broader renewable-energy training network.
Separately, following reports of deaths in Ondo linked to contaminated, unregistered local alcohol, Adebayo has called for stricter regulatory enforcement. He urged agencies such as NAFDAC and state health task forces to improve monitoring to prevent the circulation of toxic, unregulated substances and expressed condolences to the affected families.
