Crown Prince Akishino visits Paraguay for 90th anniversary of Japanese immigration

Crown Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko of Japan have arrived in Paraguay for an official visit to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Japanese immigration to the country. The visit, which marks the Prince’s first trip to Paraguay in two decades, includes meetings with the Nikkei community and institutional engagements to strengthen bilateral ties.

Beyond cultural exchange, the relationship is characterized by significant infrastructure cooperation. This includes the recent delivery of the DRM-5 ‘Paraguay’ dredge to the National Administration of Navigation and Ports (ANNP). The vessel, representing a cooperation investment of approximately 2.7 billion yen, is designed to maintain the navigability of the Paraguay River throughout the year, supporting the vital Paraguay-Paraná Waterway.

The royal couple’s itinerary includes laying wreaths at memorials for historical figures and meeting with Japanese expatriates and JICA personnel to discuss ongoing technical and developmental cooperation.
