Prince Akishino comments on Imperial House Law amendment

Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko held a press conference ahead of their official visit to Paraguay, marking the first time the Prince has expressed personal views regarding the recently amended Imperial House Law.

Addressing the legislation, which allows female imperial family members to retain their status after marriage and permits the adoption of male descendants from former imperial branches, Prince Akishino stated, “I myself have had many things to think about,” and added that he agrees with the sentiments previously expressed by Emperor Naruhito regarding the need for public understanding.

Describing himself as a “living human being,” the Prince noted that progress is important for society. Regarding the roles of female imperial members, Princess Kiko indicated that she sees no distinction between men and women in fulfilling imperial duties based on societal needs.

The couple also spoke about their children, Princess Kako and Prince Hisahito, expressing their hope that they both walk a path of happiness while fulfilling their respective duties. The upcoming visit to Paraguay will commemorate the 90th anniversary of Japanese migration to the country.
