Prince Alois vetoes abortion law reform in Liechtenstein
Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein has exercised his veto to block a proposed law aimed at liberalizing abortion access in the principality. The legislation, which had been approved by the Landtag (parliament), sought to permit terminations during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and ease access to the procedure.
The decision marks the first time during Alois's reign as regent that he has formally blocked legislation. The Princely House stated that the veto was issued because the proposed changes would not provide sufficient protection for unborn life, citing the protection of the unborn as a fundamental principle of the legal system.
Supporters of the reform, including an initiative committee that gathered significant public support, argue that the current restrictions force women to travel abroad for procedures, creating financial and practical burdens. Critics of the veto have characterized the move as a demonstration of power that bypasses the democratic process and prevents the public from voting on the matter.
