Prince Charles Cinema faces court battle over potential closure

The Prince Charles Cinema, a landmark cult film venue near London's Leicester Square, is facing a legal battle with its landlords, Zedwell LSQ Ltd and its parent company Criterion Capital. The dispute centers on the landlords' demand for a six-month break clause in a new lease, which owner Ben Freedman argues could leave the cinema “homeless” if the site is redeveloped.

Despite a petition garnering over 167,000 signatures and the venue being designated an “Asset of Community Value,” no resolution has been reached. Freedman described the legal process as expensive and frustrating, noting that the small cinema is up against a “£6 billion property company.” The parties are scheduled to head to court in early September to resolve the matter.

High-profile figures in the film industry, including directors Quentin Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson, have expressed support for the venue. Freedman stated that the cinema is prepared to let a judge decide the outcome to ensure the business's long-term safety.
