Prince Charles Cinema secures 25-year lease in London
The Prince Charles Cinema, a well-known independent venue in London’s West End, has secured its future by signing a new 25-year lease with its landlord, Zedwell LSQ Ltd. The agreement ends a period of uncertainty following a dispute over lease terms.
The conflict arose when the landlord, owned by developer Criterion Capital, sought to include a redevelopment break clause that would have allowed them to terminate the lease with six months’ notice. The cinema’s management resisted this, fearing the site would be redeveloped for more profitable uses. The new lease includes a no-break clause, ensuring the cinema remains at its Leicester Place location for the duration of the term.
The campaign to save the cinema involved significant public support, including a petition signed by over 168,000 people and a designation as an Asset of Community Value by the Westminster Council. The cinema, known for its alternative programming and popularity with directors such as Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan, is the only independent cinema in the West End.
