Prince George RCMP reports high speeding rates in school zones

A month-long speed watch campaign in Prince George, British Columbia, has revealed that a significant number of motorists are failing to adhere to school zone speed limits. Conducted throughout September by the Prince George RCMP Traffic Services and RCMP Patrol Volunteers, the initiative involved nearly 80 hours of monitoring.

Data from the campaign shows that over 35 per cent of drivers were caught speeding through school zones during school hours. Out of more than 4,500 vehicles monitored, over 1,700 were recorded speeding, and more than 100 vehicles failed to slow down for the school zones entirely.

Corporal Jennifer Cooper of the North District RCMP noted that rural school zones saw the highest number of speeders. Authorities emphasized the importance of vigilance in these areas due to the unpredictable nature of children, noting that slowing down provides necessary reaction time to prevent devastating consequences.
