Prince George’s County animal shelter completes $1.7M renovation amid overcrowding

The Prince George’s County Animal Services Facility and Adoption Center in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, has completed a $1.7 million renovation, marking its first major upgrade in 17 years. The improvements include new housing for cats, interaction rooms, 14 additional dog kennels, and enhanced sanitation equipment.

Despite these upgrades, the facility continues to face severe overcrowding. Chief Administrator David Fisher noted that while the facility’s capacity is 184, the shelter handled 600 dogs in July alone. This capacity crisis has led to recurring lists of healthy dogs at risk of euthanasia. Advocates estimate that since late 2024, at least 1,360 dogs have been placed on such lists due to the shelter running significantly over its intended capacity.
