Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly rejected Queen Elizabeth II's royal status plan
Reports suggest that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle did not agree to the terms set by the late Queen Elizabeth II regarding their status within the Royal Family. Following their decision to step back as senior royals in January 2020, the Queen reportedly ruled out a “half-in, half-out” arrangement, prohibiting the couple from representing the monarchy while they pursued private commercial interests.
Sources close to the couple claim they sought the freedom to operate on their own terms without being “micro-managed” by the institution. While they reportedly would have been open to a compromise that allowed for certain royal duties, the current stance from the Palace—including a letter from King Charles III clarifying they would not be returning to royal duties—suggests a lack of movement toward reconciliation.
Since returning to the UK, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have made public appearances, such as a recent visit to Nottingham, which supporters suggest demonstrates a successful model for their independent public engagement.
