Prince Harry resigns from African Parks board amid human rights scandal

Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, has resigned from the board of the wildlife conservation organization African Parks. The decision follows a controversy involving allegations of human rights abuses committed by the organization’s rangers in the Republic of the Congo.

An independent investigation into incidents at the Odzala-Kokoua National Park revealed that rangers had engaged in physical violence, torture, including waterboarding, sexual violence, and homicides against members of the indigenous Baka community. African Parks has acknowledged these violations and stated it is strengthening its protection mechanisms.

Survival International had previously called for the Prince’s resignation, criticizing his continued involvement with the organization despite the findings. While his spokesperson stated that the Duke remains proud of his ten-year association and continues to support the mission of African conservation, his departure marks his second exit from an African-focused organization in eighteen months, following his departure from Sentebale in 2025.
