Prince Harry loses UK privacy lawsuit against Daily Mail as he begins UK visit
A London High Court dismissed all 97 claims brought by Prince Harry, Elton John, Elizabeth Hurley and five others against Associated Newspapers, the publisher of the Daily Mail. Judge Nicklin ruled that the claimants failed to provide sufficient evidence that the newspaper had obtained information illegally, describing the accusations as “deductions” that did not amount to proof. The court also noted that the defeated party could face legal costs of up to €50 million.
The verdict was delivered on the second day of Prince Harry’s five‑day solo visit to the United Kingdom, a trip organised around a series of Invictus Games events scheduled for Birmingham in 2027. Harry travelled alone, without Meghan, Archie or Lilibet, after security concerns prevented his family from accompanying him. An invitation to stay at Buckingham Palace was withdrawn at the last minute, and a planned pool‑media session at the Royal Hospital Chelsea was cancelled because of a heatwave, leaving the venue closed to external press.
Harry and other claimants described the ruling as a “complete and obvious whitewash” and expressed disappointment at the court’s decision. The Daily Mail hailed the judgment as a victory for press freedom. The legal loss, combined with the accommodation controversy, adds tension to the already strained relationship between the Sussexes and the royal household.
