Critics on social media have questioned the legitimacy of a non-Mexican artist competing in a genre deeply tied to Mexican tradition, though the Academy maintains that the nomination meets all musical criteria without nationality restrictions.

In the Regional Mexican category, Pepe Aguilar and Christian Nodal are set to compete against one another. Aguilar addressed the family connection with humor, noting that while he and his son-in-law are rivals for the award, the presence of multiple generations in the category is a victory for Mexican music.
