Prince Rupert Gas Transmission awards first land construction contract

The Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) project has awarded its first terrestrial construction contract to the Surerus Murphy Joint Venture. This all-Canadian roster, comprising Fort St. John-based Surerus Pipeline and U.K.-based J. Murphy & Sons, will construct approximately 193 kilometres of pipeline between Chetwynd and Mackenzie in northeastern British Columbia.

Owned by the Nisga’a Nation and Western LNG, the PRGT project aims to deliver natural gas to the proposed Ksi Lisims LNG facility on Canada’s northwest coast. The project emphasizes local economic benefits, with the Nisga’a Lisims Government requiring contractors to implement Indigenous participation plans for hiring and subcontracting.

While the Surerus Murphy Joint Venture handles land construction, Swiss specialist Allseas has been contracted for the subsea pipeline work. The project is working with Bechtel on overall execution planning to minimize environmental impacts and maximize benefits for northern British Columbia and Indigenous communities.
