Prince Turki Al-Faisal calls for AI regulations to balance benefits and risks

Prince Turki Al-Faisal, Chairman of the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies, emphasized the need for regulatory frameworks for artificial intelligence to ensure it remains a benefit rather than a detriment. Speaking at a scientific seminar titled ‘Medicine and Literature between Human Creativity and Artificial Intelligence’, he warned against over-reliance on the technology, which he described as an ‘enchanting magician’ that could potentially enslave human users.

The seminar, organized by the King Faisal Center and the King Faisal Prize, explored the impact of AI across various sectors. In medicine, experts noted that AI has become a present reality in healthcare, serving as a supportive tool for doctors rather than a replacement, provided ethical and reliability standards are met. In the realm of literature, discussions focused on the challenges of distinguishing between human and machine-generated creativity.

Additionally, the seminar addressed intellectual property concerns. Representatives from the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property highlighted that the level of legal protection for works is tied to the extent of human contribution and the presence of a personal authorial touch. The discussions underscored the importance of the regulations established by Saudi Arabia and the growing international focus on creating standards to manage AI's risks and maximize its potential.
