Princes Street expected to reopen by late August

Efforts to reopen Princes Street in Edinburgh are progressing, with a target reopening date set for the end of August. Following a fire at the former Debenhams building five weeks ago, engineers are performing complex structural stabilization work to make the site safe while attempting to preserve historic features.

Key technical updates include the securing of the eastern gable, which was reduced in height by approximately two metres, and the installation of steel beams to stabilize the front façade. Over 40% of these beams are currently in place. Crews have also removed several tonnes of unsafe stonework and bricks for potential reuse.

To mitigate the economic impact of the disruption, the Council and local stakeholders discussed a communications campaign. This initiative, supported by Scottish Government funding, will include resident and visitor spending incentives, events, and promotions to support businesses and communities affected by the closure.
