Princes Street in Edinburgh to reopen following major fire
Princes Street in Edinburgh is scheduled to fully reopen on Saturday, August 29, following significant disruption caused by a major fire at the former Debenhams building on July 9.
As part of the reopening, Edinburgh Trams are expected to resume their full route from the Airport to Newhaven, and pedestrian access between Castle Street and Frederick Street will be restored for the first time in over seven weeks. While most city centre bus diversions will end, three eastbound bus stops between Castle Street and Frederick Street will remain closed.
Remedial work at the fire site continues, requiring the north side pavement of Princes Street to remain closed, with a temporary pedestrian walkway established in one lane of the eastbound carriageway. Over the past seven weeks, crews have worked to stabilize the building, including installing steel beams to support the front facade and removing several tonnes of unsafe stonework and debris.
