Princess Anne unveils WWII resistance monument in Oslo

Princess Anne and Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide unveiled the ‘Coastwatchers’ monument at Normandieplassen in Oslo Harbor. The sculpture, created by artist Håkon Anton Fagerås, honors the efforts of Norwegian and British agents during the German occupation of Norway in World War II.

The monument is part of the Anglo-Norwegian Resistance Commemoration Project (ANRCP), an initiative led by historians Tony Insall and John Andrews. Princess Anne serves as the project’s royal patron. During the ceremony, the Princess noted that the sculpture serves as a physical symbol of the cooperation between the two nations and is the first public monument to acknowledge the wartime operations of the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS).

Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide highlighted both the historical significance of the resistance efforts and the ongoing military cooperation between Norway and the United Kingdom.
