Princess Anne's historical remarks regarding her marriage to Mark Phillips

Princess Anne, the 76-year-old sister of King Charles III, has gained attention for her blunt attitude regarding her first marriage. During an interview following her 1973 engagement to officer and equestrian Mark Phillips, reporters questioned whether the couple could withstand the pressures of royal duties and media scrutiny.

While Phillips suggested they had already endured significant challenges, Anne reportedly interrupted him, stating, “Can she? She must, mustn't she?” indicating her view that fulfilling royal obligations was a necessity rather than a choice.

Anne and Phillips married at Westminster Abbey on November 14, 1973, and have two children, Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall. The couple separated in 1989 and officially divorced in 1992. Anne married Timothy Laurence later that same year. Despite the divorce, the two have maintained a civil relationship, appearing together at family events such as Peter Phillips' wedding in 2025.
