Princess Charlene of Monaco launches water‑safety drive for World Drowning Prevention Day
On World Drowning Prevention Day, Princess Charlene of Monaco used her official Instagram account to urge the public to stay vigilant around water. She cited World Health Organization data that more than 300,000 people die from drowning each year and highlighted the year's theme “Unite to turn the tide,” which aims to cut global drowning deaths by 35 % by 2035.
The Princess explained that her advocacy is rooted in personal tragedy – her five‑year‑old cousin Richard drowned in a river during her childhood and, in 2018, a close friend’s 19‑month‑old daughter drowned in a pool. These losses led her to found the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation in 2012. The foundation now runs swimming‑education, lifesaving‑training and water‑safety programmes in dozens of countries.
To mark the occasion, the Prince’s Palace of Monaco was illuminated in blue. Charlene also stressed the importance of learning to swim, CPR and staying alert, especially during the summer months. Her own competitive background includes representing South Africa at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games as part of the 4×100 metre medley relay.
