Lady Diana’s “Revenge Dress” to be auctioned in New York

Lady Diana’s iconic “Revenge Dress,” designed by Christina Stambolian, is scheduled to be auctioned by Sotheby’s in New York in December 2026. The black, off-the-shoulder garment became a symbol of the Princess of Wales’s autonomy after she wore it to a Vanity Fair dinner at London’s Serpentine Gallery on June 29, 1994. This appearance occurred the same evening Prince Charles publicly admitted to infidelity during a televised interview.

The dress, which was previously sold in a 1997 charity auction organized by Prince William, is estimated to fetch between $150,000 and $300,000. Before the auction, the piece will be featured in an international exhibition across several major cities. A portion of the proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh to support mental health and psychiatric care.

While the dress returns to the spotlight, the jewelry Diana paired with the outfit remains a subject of interest. Her ensemble included a seven-strand pearl necklace with a large sapphire, diamond and pearl earrings, a sapphire and diamond bracelet, and her engagement ring. Some of these pieces have since been seen on the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, while others have not been seen in public for decades.
