Princess Diana’s “revenge dress” to be auctioned by Sotheby’s

Princess Diana’s iconic “revenge dress,” a black silk off-the-shoulder gown designed by Christina Stambolian, is set to be auctioned by Sotheby’s in New York on December 9, 2026. The garment is expected to fetch between $150,000 and $300,000. This marks the first time the dress has been offered at auction since 1997.

The dress gained worldwide fame after Diana wore it to a Vanity Fair gala at the Serpentine Gallery in London on June 29, 1994. Her appearance occurred the same evening that then-Prince Charles publicly admitted to infidelity during a televised interview. The outfit became a symbol of her confidence and independence.

Prior to the auction, the dress will embark on an international exhibition tour. It will be displayed at Sotheby’s in London from September 18 to 24, followed by stops in Hong Kong and Geneva, before arriving in New York in early December. A portion of the sale proceeds will be donated to the NHS Lothian Charity to support the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.
