Princess Diana’s “Revenge Dress” to be auctioned in New York

Princess Diana’s iconic “Revenge Dress” is set to return to auction at Sotheby’s in New York this December during Luxury Week. The black silk crepe garment, designed by Greek stylist Christina Stambolian, was famously worn by the Princess on June 29, 1994, at the Serpentine Gallery in London.

Her choice of attire coincided with a televised interview in which then-Prince Charles admitted to infidelity. The bold fashion statement became a symbol of Diana taking control of her own narrative, earning it the enduring nickname “Revenge Dress.”

Sotheby’s estimates the dress could fetch between $150,000 and $300,000, though some projections suggest it could reach as high as $400,000. The garment will undergo an international tour, with exhibitions planned in London, Hong Kong, and Geneva prior to the sale. The dress has been held in a private collection since it was last auctioned in 1997 to raise funds for AIDS charities.
