Princess Diana conducted secret nighttime charity missions in London
Former royal press secretary Dickie Arbiter has revealed that Princess Diana frequently conducted secret nighttime excursions through London to support vulnerable populations. In his upcoming book, ‘On Duty with the Royals: The Inside Story of the Modern Monarchy’, Arbiter describes how the Princess of Wales would slip away from Kensington Palace to distribute money to sex workers and check on the welfare of the homeless, particularly in the Paddington area.
Arbiter notes that these missions were driven by a combination of compassion, loneliness, and boredom. He describes the Princess as feeling “very lonely” behind palace walls, noting that strict security protocols made social visits from friends exhausting and difficult to arrange. To escape this isolation, Diana would sometimes persuade her bodyguards to take the evening off so she could drive through the city alone, away from the cameras and official protocols.
