Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway faces early royal duties amid family health crises

Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 22, is being urged to take on a much larger role in the Norwegian monarchy after a series of health emergencies struck the royal family. Her mother, Crown Princess Mette‑Marit, underwent a lung transplant in June, and the king and queen, Harald and Sonja, are approaching their 90th birthdays, creating staffing shortages at the court.

Because of these pressures, officials are discussing a possible constitutional amendment that would allow Ingrid Alexandra to act as regent sooner than traditionally expected. Historian Emma Paaske warned that the early responsibilities could be "destructive" for the princess, potentially compromising her education and personal development.

Amid the demanding schedule, the princess attended the 2026 World Cup matches in New Jersey with her brother, Prince Sverre Magnus.
