Princess Ingrid Alexandra returns to Norway to study as mother battles illness

Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 22, has left her exchange program at the University of Sydney and returned to Norway to be near her mother, Crown Princess Mette‑Marit, who has been placed on the lung‑transplant list due to progressive lung fibrosis. She will continue her studies as an exchange student at the University of Oslo’s Faculty of Social Sciences for the autumn semester.

Historian and royal biographer Tor Bomann‑Larsen described the situation as a “helt spesiell situasjon” in Norwegian royal history, noting that no previous royal has altered study plans because of a family health issue. University of Oslo’s director Audun Digerud said the Princess received no special treatment; her application arrived after the deadline but was accepted under the university’s standard flexible policy for exchange candidates.

The move is framed primarily as a family‑driven decision rather than a change in royal protocol, highlighting the personal dimension of the monarchy’s role.
