Princess Isabella of Denmark Begins 11‑Month Military Service

Princess Isabella of Denmark, the 19‑year‑old eldest daughter of King Frederik X and Queen Mary, reported to the Antvorskov barracks in Slagelse on 3 August 2026. She entered the Guard Hussar Regiment for an eleven‑month basic training period, becoming one of the first women to serve under Denmark’s newly extended conscription.

The Danish government recently lengthened compulsory service from four to eleven months and introduced mandatory service for women aged 18 and over, citing a deteriorating security situation in Europe. About 1,600 young people began the revised basic service on the same day. Isabella will forgo any remuneration during her term, as confirmed by the royal household. Her older brother, Crown Prince Christian, previously completed his own service at the same barracks.

The event highlights Denmark’s broader move to broaden its defence forces while maintaining a tradition of royal family members serving in the armed forces.
