Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit discharged after lung transplant

Norwegian Crown Princess Mette‑Marit, 52, was released from Oslo's Rikshospitalet on 14 July after a successful lung transplant performed on 17 June. The operation, carried out just twelve days after she was placed on the transplant waiting list, addressed her chronic pulmonary fibrosis that had been diagnosed in 2018.

Following discharge, the princess will remain on lifelong immunosuppressive medication, limiting her ability to attend public events for at least a year. She will undergo intensive rehabilitation to regain strength and will be closely monitored for potential organ rejection and infections, risks that are heightened by the required drug regimen.

Norway’s highly efficient Scandiatransplant network facilitated the rapid organ allocation, and royal officials emphasized that no preferential treatment was given. The princess’s public gratitude has drawn attention to rare lung diseases and highlighted the transparency of the Norwegian royal family regarding health matters.
