Princess Märtha Louise files $80 million defamation lawsuit

Princess Märtha Louise and her husband, Durek Verrett, have filed a massive lawsuit in a US court seeking approximately 800 million NOK (roughly 80 million USD) in damages. The legal action targets 14 individuals, including Verrett’s half-sister, a former partner, and a former collaborator, alleging defamation and breach of confidentiality.

The lawsuit claims that edited audio recordings were used to spread false and damaging allegations against Verrett, timed specifically to coincide with the release of the Netflix documentary ‘Rebel Royals’. The plaintiffs argue the publication was intended to maximize reputational harm.

This legal battle has reignited a debate in Norway regarding the Princess’s royal status. Royal expert Tove Taalesen has called on King Haakon VIII to strip Märtha Louise of her title, citing the controversy surrounding her actions. While the late King Harald V. maintained her title based on her lineage, some observers suggest the new monarch should reconsider her position. Currently, the Princess is prohibited from using her title for commercial purposes and has no official representative duties, though no formal decision to revoke her title has been made.
