Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory scientists find nuclear fusion shortcut
Scientists at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), a U.S. Department of Energy laboratory, have identified a potential shortcut for achieving nuclear fusion. By updating the long-standing Lawson criterion, researchers have discovered that changing the sequence in which plasma is heated and compressed could significantly reduce the energy required to achieve ignition.
Physicists Luis Delgado-Aparicio, Masayuki Ono, and Jonathan Menard developed a more comprehensive model by incorporating four additional factors that influence plasma behavior. This new framework, published in Physical Review Letters, offers a more efficient method for determining how fusion systems should heat and maintain fuel, marking a critical step toward practical fusion power.
