Princeton researchers develop light-programmable 2D semiconductor
Researchers at Princeton University have developed an ultra-thin, two-dimensional semiconductor that can be programmed, erased, and reprogrammed using light. The material, which is only a few molecules thick, integrates a super-thin semiconductor with light-responsive molecules that alter their structure when exposed to different wavelengths.
Unlike traditional semiconductors that respond to electrical signals but maintain fixed properties once manufactured, this new material allows for adjustable conductivity and optical responses. This capability aims to move electronics beyond the physical limits of traditional miniaturization by creating materials that are adaptable and smart. The discovery could lead to significant advancements in energy-efficient sensors, optoelectronic devices, and computing technologies.
