Princeton resident petitions to ban Flock Safety surveillance cameras

A resident of Princeton, New Jersey, has launched a petition calling for a ban on Flock Safety cameras, citing concerns over the creation of a ‘nationwide surveillance network’. The petition, started by biotech CEO Chris Potts, requests that the Princeton Council ban the specific technology, publicly disclose the locations of any existing cameras and data-sharing agreements, and mandate public hearings before introducing similar technology.

While the petition targets Flock Safety, Princeton Police Chief Matthew Solovay stated that the department does not use Flock cameras or Flock Safety technology, though it does utilize automated license plate reader (ALPR) technology. The movement highlights broader concerns regarding the scale of such systems; Flock Safety, an Atlanta-based company, reports its AI-powered system is deployed in over 6,000 communities across 49 states, with nearly 100,000 cameras in operation.
