Princeton University study links music to narrative brain activity
Researchers at Princeton University have discovered that music triggers brain activity patterns in areas associated with imagination and meaning-making that are remarkably similar to those activated by spoken narratives. The study, published in ‘Nature Communications’, utilized fMRI technology to observe volunteers listening to unfamiliar instrumental music and spoken stories.
The findings indicate that music is not merely an abstract stimulus; instead, listeners engage in a concrete process of assigning meaning. The study noted that approximately 71 percent of participants described stories consistent with a dominant interpretation of a musical fragment. This phenomenon involves the brain’s default mode network, which connects regions responsible for memory, imagination, and semantic processing.
Professor Elizabeth Margulis of Princeton University noted that the results demonstrate a different dimension of how music is perceived, showing that the brain processes musical meaning in a way that mirrors how it processes storytelling.
