Indonesia prepares for mandatory halal certification in October 2026

Indonesian industries and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are reportedly prepared for the mandatory halal certification policy set to take effect on October 18, 2026. Experts note that many large companies and a significant number of MSMEs have already complied with the requirements.

Mala Nurilmala, Secretary of the Halal Science Center at IPB University, stated that the policy is a vital step in strengthening the national halal industrial ecosystem. She emphasized that halal certification now encompasses more than religious compliance, involving science, technology, traceability, and global competitiveness across sectors such as food, beverages, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.

Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita highlighted Indonesia's ambition to become a global halal industry hub, noting that the global halal market is projected to reach US$3.56 trillion by 2029. Similarly, Kadin Indonesia's Titi Khoiriah urged businesses to view the mandate as a strategic opportunity to increase competitiveness and expand into international markets rather than just a regulatory burden.
