PRIO installs 30 oil collection containers in Ílhavo

PRIO has installed 30 new collection containers for used cooking oil (UCO) in the municipality of Ílhavo, Portugal. This initiative, carried out through PRIO Ecowaste in partnership with the local City Council, aims to transform collected waste into biofuel to support the circular economy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

The containers have been strategically distributed across the four parishes of Ílhavo to ensure easy access for the population. The collected oils will be treated by EC3R and sent to PRIO’s New Energies Complex at the Port of Aveiro to be converted into biodiesel. Currently, it is estimated that only about 10% of used cooking oils are recycled.

The local municipality already utilizes ECO Diesel in its entire fleet, a fuel that incorporates 15% biofuel produced from used cooking oil. Environmental data highlights the importance of this collection, noting that a single liter of used cooking oil can contaminate up to one million liters of water, whereas one thousand liters of oil can produce approximately 950 liters of biodiesel.
