Priory House renovation uncovers medieval wall paintings

Renovation work at the historic Priory House in Dunstable, England, has led to the discovery of significant historical artifacts and architectural features. Experts identified rare medieval wall paintings dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, alongside five distinct layers of decorative design.

Additional findings include 18th-century wallpaper remnants and 19th-century straw weaving from a former hat factory. The site also revealed a previously unknown door connecting the main street to the monastery grounds, as well as evidence of original room layouts from when the building was part of the Dunstable Priory.

Tony Calladine, Regional Director of Historic England, noted that the house has preserved the history of Dunstable for centuries. The renovation project, which has been underway since 2022, is expected to be completed by 2027.
